This project was developed in part with Hadas Zemer and Giovanni Innella, commissioned by Ymere, a low income housing association, to rethink the architectural identity of the Dapperbuurt, Amsterdam.

Serving as the main entry into the Netherlands for first arrival immigrants, the inhabitants of Dapperbuurt are what make up the singularity and richness of the of this neighborhood, albeit one of the poorest areas in the capital city.

The recurring trend of demolition/reconstruction that occurred in the 70s and 80s is one of the main reasons of its impoverishment and architectural standardization. Our response to exactly this fact was not to demolish anything; instead enhancing the existing urban fabric.

We undertook an exhaustive mapping of details and traces left by inhabitants: from chalk drawings to shabbily constructed chairs, spontaneous interventions were in abundance. These appropriations of the city show the willingness of Dapperbuurtians to react to these urban architectural standards, adapting them to their own needs.

Our work consisted of modifying the basic elements of the neighborhood: bricks, paving stones, tiles, to the specific usages we observed already put into place. For example, a brick was transformed to a chalk holder for kids.

By adding these architectural details we wanted to encourage further interventions and appropriations of the neighborhood by the residents, as well as leaving traces of these so-called “insignificant” activities.

This project was conducted together and on behalf of Nayef Francis, Lebanese designer and architect.

After a period of industrialization swept across the region, Lebanese craft was transformed into folklore and souvenir shop mass reproductions. No longer seen as a cultural vehicle, ancient Lebanese practices such as glassmaking, possibly invented by the Phoenicians, are on their way to disappearing and currently not being utilized up to their potential.

As a reaction to this trend, we developed a collection of objects and furniture that utilizes local manual skills: welding, woodworking, glassblowing, ceramics, etc. Inspired by the importance to conserve these crafts, our objective was to adapt them to contemporary lifestyles (new uses, new forms, new production processes), to make them transporters of tradition, contributing to the development of a contemporary cultural identity.

The collection, under the name of Nayef Francis, will soon be presented in Beirut, Lebanon.

Conception and implementation of event communication for the 6th Jeux de la Francophonie, Beirut, Lebanon, 2009

The main interest of this project stems from the contrast between the clients demands, that of the organizational comity of an international event, and the difficulty to precisely respond to each of them in a context which was very particular.

The graphic design was implemented mostly on 2-D forms; although the challenge was to create communication materials for a stadium that was at the time, still occupied by the countries’ army; in a place where photos were prohibited; and therefore exact dimensions and proportions were unknown. Additionally, the gaze of the various organizing bodies, conservative and otherwise unconcernedly open, were complicated influences when having to produce materials with the athletes partially nude bodies.

Because of the political and religious context in Beirut and more broadly Lebanon, the communication materials are varied and loosely organized due to the inherent complexity of the situation. The result is an installation of the banners and posters through improvisation and experimentation and the appropriation of these visuals by spectators and the governing municipalities adding to part of the charm of the event in itself and the communication.

The Laboratory of Food Analysis is an interactive installation, developed by Maxime Morel and Lise Lefebvre. Designed as a playful critique of the basic approach of the diet and nutrition industry, the audience is encouraged to participate in a mock-scientific experiment. During the lab visit, visitors are assessed by a lab assistant who collects their physical attributes and personal data in order to manufacture a 'Nutricard'.

The Nutricard is a summary of their nutritional needs. It is made of edible paper soaked in different percentages of plant extracts according to the physiological information gathered during the consultation. For example, someone wearing glasses and who is tested to have a slightly elevated alkaline PH in their saliva will receive a personal Nutricard with a high percentage of carotene to improve eyesight and printed with Citrus extract to re-balance their PH.

The critique is based in the simplistic analysis that the visitor allows him/herself to be subjected to with the only objective being a small piece of edible paper.

Locally Made In China is a project aimed at preserving the cultural identity of major export countries. Often times objects that are produced in developing countries, however rich in local materials and ancestral knowledge, tend to resemble each other, falling into an aesthetic standardization of mass-produced goods.

Taking the opposite course, I designed objects that take into consideration the exporting countries’ local resources as part of the creative process. This idea led me to collaborate with Chinese factories and craft workshops, creating a collection of objects that met these guidelines.

For example, Lacquer, invented in Asia, is a primitive form of plastic. Thanks to its water resistant and antibacterial properties, Lacquer is a perfect material for keyboards. The keyboard shown here uses recycled tires for the body, and covered in a thin layer lacquer to reduce cost.

Oftentimes creative commissions are abstract and subjective (ie: “I want my logo to express my energetic personality and sophistication….”) and design processes are based largely on intuition. In our project, the Laboratory mimics scientific methodologies to collect physical attributes of visitors in order to produce an “identity product.” The visual identity of participants is determined according to their visual appearance: one’s weight defined the “weight” of the typeface (bold/regular/light), the amount of accessories worn yielded the information to select the type of font (serif/sans-serif) etc.

The automatic aspect of the project and similarity between visitors’ final products, reflects upon the working methods, and relevance of, social classification and representation systems.

Developed in collaboration with Lise Lefebvre, this projects was commissioned by the Van Abbe Museum, the Netherlands during the exhibition Tricksters Tricked, curated by Hadas Zemer.

Is a plastic Eiffel Tower a symbol of France or simply a materialization of Chinese production knowhow?

These souvenirs, purchased in bulk by tourists, are symbols par excellence of national identity. However, they are most of the time produced thousands of miles away in countries where labor is less expensive. After visiting souvenir factories in China, I noticed that these objects are produced from two-dimensional media and carried out by people who have never seen the original monument. By producing objects in this way, the forms are subject to a wide interpretation.

Inspired by this detail, I decided to replicate the same production methods: I ordered souvenirs by sending images found on Google of iconic world-known monuments along with images of popular Chinese crafts.

This “modern Vanita” reflects the strangeness of the world production system and the double loss of identity.
